THE Shanghai government plans to invest 160 billion yuan (US$23.5 billion) by 2010 as it implements Beijing’s policy to boost domestic demand and spur growth.
The city will also beef up urban infrastructure construction, boost investment in suburban areas to develop advanced agriculture and help small- and medium-sized enterprises to raise capital.

Underscoring its leadership position in the Asia-Pacific, IHG (InterContinental Hotels Group) signed a deal with the Shanghai Huangpu River Banks Asset Management Co., Ltd for its first Hotel Indigo® in the region to be located in Shanghai.
IHG announced the launch of its fast growing lifestyle brand to the region just last month. This partnership will see the world’s leading hotel group by number of rooms manage Hotel Indigo Shanghai on the Bund. The hotel will be on a riverfront site along the Huangpu River that brings together the past, present and future of Shanghai.

“A FRENCH-STYLE pedestrian street will open in Shanghai’s Changning District in May.
Officials hope the 670-meter long stretch in Huangjinchengdao in the Gubei area becomes the top pedestrian street in the city, Oriental Morning Post reported today”

SHANGHAI’S urban planning authority has developed tougher rules designed to bring historic preservation standards up to the same level in the suburbs as they are in the downtown.
The plan, unveiled yesterday by the Shanghai Urban Planning and Administrative Bureau, covers 32 suburban sites of historic importance and will soon be approved by city government, officials said.

SHANGHAI officials yesterday called on local government departments and other agencies to go all out to improve the public amenity of Shanghai in the lead-up to the 2010 World Expo.
The city has set up a special office to manage and monitor the campaign, named the “600-day Countdown Actions.”
The office yesterday held its first meeting, bringing together directors of 37 local departments and managers of big companies.

YEARS of negotiations between the Shanghai government and Walt Disney Co appear to have clinched a deal for a huge Disneyland to be built in Pudong.
The official announcement is expected to be made after the Beijing Olympics in August.
An exclusive report published by the Hong Kong-based Wen Wei Po newspaper yesterday said the park will cover about 10 square kilometers of land - about eight times the size of Hong Kong Disneyland.

ANOTHER link in the Yangtze River Tunnel and Bridge project was completed in Shanghai yesterday.
Major engineering work on the tunnel section, from Pudong New Area to Changxing Island, and the bridge section from Changxing to Chongming Island, are now finished.
