Two-thousand hikers helped Secretary for the Environment Edward Yau open Hong Kong’s 24th country park on Lantau Island today.
The Lantau North (Extension) Country Park adds another 2,360 hectares to Hong Kong’s country park area. It brings Lantau Island’s total country park area to 10,000 hectares, or 70% of the island.

“Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty is traveling in China this week with representatives of 30 companies from the province’s growing environmental sector. McGuinty hopes to profit from China’s plans to spend $175 billion on green projects between 2006 and 2010.”

“World Urban Forum 4 will be held in Nanjing, China on 03 - 06 November 2008
The World Urban Forum was established by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies and policies. It is projected that in the next fifty years, two-thirds of humanity will be living in towns and cities. A major challenge is to minimize burgeoning poverty in cities, improve the urban poor’s access to basic facilities such as shelter, clean water and sanitation and achieve environment-friendly, sustainable urban growth and development.”

This was supposed to be the site of Dongtan, the world’s first eco-city, a paradise of sustainable living that would house half-a-million people and set an example to the world.
However an investigation by The Sunday Telegraph has revealed that Dongtan is still nothing but a pipe dream.

Shanghai is to adopt a watered-down version of the capital’s traffic restrictions in a bid to clean the air, clear the roads and save energy.
Starting next month, vehicles belonging to the government or State-owned enterprises will be banned from the roads on one out of five weekdays in a system based on license plate numbers.

The 2008 International Seaside City of Tourism Development summit was held this morning in Rizhao, a beautiful costal city in east China’s Shandong Province.
With the theme of “Ocean, Ecology, Environmentally-friendly and the Future”, this year’s gathering is building a platform to encourage exchanges among tourism cities home and abroad on the topics including the travel industry, image-building tourism and management, as well as environmental protection.

China’s Renewable Energy Development Project (REDP) was rewarded the Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy, the world’s leading green energy prize, in a final competition taking place here Thursday.
The REDP was launched in 2001 by the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) and the World Bank (WB), with international grant financing provided by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), with one of its main aims to promote the installation of photovoltaic (PV) solar home systems in remote off-grid homes in nine western Chinese provinces; to improve the quality of production of PV modules and other system components in China; to provide free information about PV; and to facilitate cooperation between the PV sector in China and the rest of the world.
